Excerpts from my favourite books (:October 27th, 2009 by Abdul Hafidz Bin Haji Omar |
Looking at the other posts, I’m kinda at loss of what to articulate for my entry here.
I love to read a lot, and these are some excerpts which I would love to share with the readers here. Nothing much, except that I feel that some books are really able to relate to you, in certain ways.
Fire and hope are connected, just so you know. The way the Greeks told it, Zeus put Prometheus and Epimetheus in charge of creating life on earth. Epimetheus made the animals, giving out bonuses like swiftness and strength and fur and wings. By the time Prometheus made man, all the best qualities had been given out. He settled for making them walk upright, and he gave them fire.
Zeus, pissed off, took it away. But Prometheus saw his pride and joy shivering and unable to cook. He lit a torch from the sun and brought it to man again. To punish Prometheus, Zeus had him chained to a rock, where an eagle fed his liver. To punish man, Zeus created the first woman – Pandora – and gave her a gift, a box she was forbidden to open.
Pandora’s curiosity got the best of her, and one day she opened that box. Out came plague and misery and mischief. She managed to shot the lid tight before hope escaped. It’s the only weapon left we have to fight the others. – My Sister’s Keeper
Ask any fireman; he’ll tell you it’s true. Hell. Ask any father.
Wait for hope patiently, for hope will always be there for us.
Oh, a gift. A gift! She gave a firm nod. He gave her a gift, and she was giving him a gift. Wow! He was overwhelmed. This was the true kindness of strangers. This was a National Geographic moment: two people, vastly different, separated by language and culture and a whole lot else, yet giving and giving back the best they had to offer, their own humanity, their cartoons, their pickles. He gratefully accepted the pink plastic bag with its soggy lump, this beautiful token of universal friendship, so warming to the heart. He would keep it forever-or until disaster struck. – Saving fish from drowning by Amy Tan
There’ll always be humanity around (:
Well, I must endure the presence of two or three caterpillars if I wish to become acquainted with the butterflies. It seems that they are very beautiful. – The Little Prince
This is my favourite because I feel that everybody loves beauty, but we fail to realise that beauty exists in many varied forms.
